O Say Can You Please Entry 13: Pain from Ukraine

Mr. President, it’s for more than just that.
As if it wasn’t completely obvious already, this entry will be all about impeachment. This is because Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, finally got her act together and decided to put the President through impeachment proceedings. The reason for this was a troubling call to the President of Ukraine that aimed to gather dirt on Democratic presidential primary candidate Joe Biden. This is due to Biden’s son Hunter having some shady dealings with that country’s government, to say the least. The call came under intense scrutiny, and now, the camel’s back is not just broken, but probably shattered.
The actual call is probably a good place to start this analysis. However, it is worth noting that this memorandum is not verbatim. Anyway, Trump called the Ukrainian President Zelensky (a former comedian who played Ukraine’s President on TV) to congratulate him on winning his election. Topics discussed included general relations between the two countries, European inaction in Ukraine, and Joe Biden. We’ll now run down key portions of the memo, and see if anything here rises to an impeachable level.
The first section worth pointing out is said by Trump, and it is basically promising 400 million dollars of aid to Ukraine as well as dissing Germany for providing too little. It is innocuous at face value, but looking at events, it is a little less so. You see, just before this phone call, Trump prevented that aid, which was promised by Congress, from getting to Ukraine. He stated that this was to get Europe to pay up, but as you’ll see later, I have doubts that the stated reason was the true motive.
Moving on, we find out Zelensky has a pro-Western bent rather than sucking up to Russia, but he says that neither the US or Europe have enforced the sanctions placed on that nation as a result of the Crimea annexation. However, the next exchange is where things get more interesting. Trump asks if Ukraine could do him a “favor” and mentions a company called Cloudstrike. This company investigated Russia’s breaching of DNC (Democratic Party) data back in 2016. Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, is also trying to investigate how Manafort got caught working in Ukraine through this firm, so that’s also worth noting. Then, Trump asks for assistance in figuring out the origins of what is implied (through a name-drop of Robert Mueller) to be the Russia investigation. This is huge, simply because it shows Trump still had an interest in discrediting the investigation, even after it was finished. People who are guilty don’t let go of the fear of being caught for their crimes easily, as we all know thanks to OJ Simpson. Even if Trump is completely innocent and is being slandered out the wazoo on these matters, he sure is acting guilty (kind of like OJ again). Nothing new happens beyond that point, so that ends this entry, but much more on the impeachment inquiry is coming up soon. Stay tuned.
