If I had to choose between the two main parties in American politics, I would easily say I’m a Democrat. Their political views just seem to emphasize helping the downtrodden back on their feet as well as embracing people for who they are. There’s also the Dems warning about climate change since decades ago, while the GOP has only recently realized the extent of that problem. These are policies that make sense to me, simply because they help people beyond the uppermost echelons of society, at least to some extent.
However, the Democratic Party as of now is in serious trouble. To reference the movie Moneyball, there’s good political situations and bad political situations. Then there’s 50 feet of crap, and then there’s the Democrats right now. For all of their talk regarding fixing the systemic issues in our country, the Democrats have done practically nothing of the sort to remedy any of them. And then they wonder why the recent authoritarian bent of the Republicans’ policy plan is growing more and more popular. To find out how the Dems got in this untenable mess, we have to turn back the clock.
January 2021 was a good time for the Democrats. After the insurrection on the 6th of that month, not only did the outgoing President jump the shark on the way out, but the Dems won control of the Senate thanks to grassroots Georgia activism. They were in a damn good position, controlling both houses of Congress and the incoming Biden Presidency. Sure, the Trump administration lucked their way into three Supreme Court picks, but that didn’t matter to the Democratic politicians. They set upon their stated mission to “save democracy” and proceeded to immediately hit a dozen brick walls at the same time. Where to even start?
Well, let’s start with the COVID pandemic, which would’ve been a problem under any administration. But, because America can’t have nice things anymore, it started during an administration that was arguably busier spinning public relations nightmares than actually governing. Take for example, President Trump’s numerous lies regarding ways to handle the pandemic. From denying COVID’s very existence to suggesting the injection of bleach like some wannabe emo edgelord, the previous administration completely botched theor pandemic response. How does this relate to Biden, though? The simple answer is that the particularly lethal Delta variant and exceptionally transmissible Omicron variants would not have hit America as hard as they did if either Trump or Biden knew what they were doing.
In fact, what Biden messed up is mainly about the vaccine rollout. Once touted by Democrats as a way to end this pandemic once and for all, the Republicans completely sabotaged any plan that the Biden administration pushed, mainly to “own the libs.” They exaggerated one-in-a-million side effects and invoked international and American laws alike, as well as some that don’t even exist. It’s spelled HIPAA, and doesn’t involve keeping vaccine information confidential, I’m just saying. Simply put, Biden and the Democrats didn’t idiot-proof their vaccine plans.
Another roadblock would soon become apparent, and that roadblock would be two Democratic Senators. This ended up effectively nullifying any hopes of the Georgia runoffs impacting reforms positively, and really arrested the Democrats’ momentum after the insurrection. And I quote from Entry 25 of this very blog, “Senator Joe Manchin has one job: to represent the interests of the people of West Virginia. He’s failed even more at his job than anybody who ever worked at Enron back in the day. He’s embarrassed himself for the whole nation to see more than even a socially awkward teenager. Finally, he has destroyed any hope of Biden’s agenda getting passed in its current state, just like that meteor that killed the dinosaurs. If the Democrats get torpedoed in the upcoming midterms as is currently projected, this Senator will be the only one to blame.”
Of course, he’s only the more prominent roadblock, the other being Arizona’s Kyrsten Sinema. I also mentioned her ineptitude back in Entry 18, and I had this to say: “Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is completely out of touch. I understand that Arizona is still transitioning to a blue state, and that mistakes will happen because of that, but this level of ineptitude is downright embarrassing. I get that Arizona will want a moderate Dem Senator, but for the love of God, pick someone who can read a f***ing room.”
Of course, those were only the initial potholes. Things have since gotten dire for the Democrats, and this is due to yet more fiascos arresting their momentum. Some of these will probably get their own entries in the future, but one in particular stands out as both troubling and humiliating. It’s finally time to talk about Biden and his administration. Strap the f*** in.
Let’s start with inflation. The American Rescue Plan was helpful when it first passed, but it cost $1.9 trillion. Even CNN is now saying that was a little much, in retrospect. After all, it pumped so much money into the economy, according to the article, that prices were surely going to go up. Also, let’s not forget how many global supply chain breaks there have been recently, especially considering Ukraine, gas prices, and so much more. Why am I getting Jimmy Carter vibes from Biden because of this? Because they are the exact same: Kind, good-hearted people who can’t quite fix an inflation crisis.
Also, I can’t help but wonder what’s going through Biden’s head at this point. I’m not going to play the role of a doctor with him, per se, but some things are still baffling. Take this list of gaffes from the New York Post. Yes, I’m actually citing part of the Murdoch media empire. God help me. These gaffes include being repeatedly condescending towards his own voters, among other flare-ups.
And don’t get me started about the racist incident on a certain… provocateur’s podcast. And no, I’m not talking about Joe Rogan. I’ve done that enough. Seriously, for all of the Republicans’ talk about cancel culture, this should’ve gotten Biden in that kind of trouble. That’s all I’ll say.
So what happens from here? Well, Biden and the Democrats will limp their way to the midterm elections, in all likelihood. If this is the case, they’ll get trounced by the Republicans, especially if the Democrat voter base repeats 2016. However, a giant wrench got thrown into the equation as of May 3, 2022. That, however, is the next entry’s topic.
