Now that I’ve had a couple of days to let this simmer, I finally feel ready to address the elephant in the womb room. This decision is frightening, and not particularly worth joking about in and of itself. Rather, I will tackle two angles that will actually be rewarding for me to write. First, I will look at the Supreme Court’s mind-numbing decisions as of late, and then I’ll roast right-wing reactions to the most notable case. You know the one by now.

Before any of that, this story takes us back to 1973, when Roe v. Wade was just decided and my mother was a toddler. Activists were celebrating the Supreme Court for granting the American people reproductive freedom. However, anything the Court gives to America can still be taken away. That is, unless Congress officially codifies it. Therefore, we must detail the steps that led to the Supreme Court literally taking away a right.

The next stop on this journey is the confirmations of the five Justices who were willing to toss out half a century of legal precedent for political expediency. The first of these was that of Clarence Thomas, and let’s just say his hearing was contentious. The hearings then rightly called out Thomas for probable sexual misconduct against an aide of his named Anita Hill. Unfortunately, while the American public was sympathetic towards Hill, the sympathy was completely absent where it would actually matter. That place was an all-male Senate Judiciary Committee that both doubted and attacked Hill. As a result, Thomas still got on the bench in a close vote, and over time, these razor-thin confirmation margins would become more of a trend.

By 2018, two more of the five Justices who doomed Roe v. Wade, those Justices being Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch, were confirmed. That year, the hearings would turn into another crapshoot, with the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. He once again seemed like a lock to be confirmed, but then, the same issues that plagued Clarence Thomas almost nipped Kavanaugh’s nomination in the bud. In other words, another current Justice was accused of serious sexual misconduct during his confirmation hearings. Kavanaugh very nearly got Borked, with a vote of 50-48 resulting in his confirmation. On top of that, the difference-making votes were those of Joe Manchin and Susan Collins, both of whom now regret their choice. To put it bluntly, these two dopes should have voted to not confirm Kavanaugh, but they got duped by him saying Roe v. Wade was “settled law.” It’s a lifetime appointment, and therefore not a position to give to someone you have any reservations about. After the rushjob confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett in 2020, the stage was now unfortunately set for Roe to go.

The impacts of the decision to overturn the Constitutional right to abortions are severe and numerous. For one thing, there are situations where an abortion is absolutely medically necessary to protect the life of the mother. The first of these situations is if the baby won’t survive outside of the womb due to birth defects. After all, women can die delivering their babies, and if a woman has to birth a doomed baby, that’s literally risking mothers’ lives for no reward. Also, there’s ectopic pregnancies, which implant outside of the uterus, to consider. Over time, these will cause the reproductive tract to rupture and cause the mother to bleed out internally. There’s literally no way other than abortion to deal with this problem.

On top of that, abortion is generally allowed in many religions, so a ban on it would potentially violate religious freedoms listed in the 1st Amendment. Take Judaism, for example, which states that if the mother’s life is in danger, the mother’s needs come first. According to this same article, Christianity and Islam are more skeptical of abortion, but they also agree that the mother’s needs come first. The only exceptions I could find were those of Evangelical Christians and radical sects of Islam. What I’m saying is that this violates the religious freedoms of literally everybody in this country who isn’t an Evangelical Christian. That means a majority of the population in America has lost their right to freedom of religion.

In short, the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn fifty years of legal precedent that Roe v. Wade set in place is appalling. It will adversely affect the lives of all Americans, just for the sake of right-wing political expediency. To stop this, vote for the Democrats however you can in November. They are not perfect, but they are better than a real-life Gilead, and maybe this decision has finally lit a fire under them. We as a nation can only hope and vote.
