March 2023 was looking like a bad month to be Donald Trump due to the looming specter of a criminal indictment, but that is unlikely to happen for some time at this rate. Regardless, the former President is certainly not out of the woods, and the actions of both Trump and his supporters are certainly not helping him. It began on March 19th when Trump posted on social media that he expected to be arrested the following Tuesday. The crime that the arrest would purportedly be due to was a humiliating hush money scheme involving paying off a Porn star.
Believe it or not, this has been the focus of a yearslong investigation by New York City officials. If you recall the Stormy Daniels scandal from back when Trump was in the first half of his term, that’s what this is about. Over the years, this case has been a saga filled with hilarious drama, from Stormy’s first lawyer eventually being jailed for fraud to endless jokes at the expense of Trump’s genitalia.
While Trump did not get arrested as predicted on what would have been a truly fateful Tuesday, he has continued the incendiary rhetoric that his entire political brand has been built on. Many prominent Republican politicians have come to Trump’s defense, and most of these defenders have been using the same argument. That argument goes along the lines of “Trump was President once, so indicting him for a crime, even after his term ended, would be unprecedented and violate all legal norms in this country.” I’m not saying that this argument is entirely factually wrong, but there are things that President Trump definitely at least had a hand in that were also entirely unprecedented and in violation of all norms. I can name one thing in particular, I’m just saying.
And then there’s the rally Trump recently held near Waco, Texas. Yes, this is the same Waco where the Branch Davidians had their infamous standoff with the FBI. This event is regarded in several extremist circles as a prime example of the government overreach they claim to fight against. Guess who’s been treating his own legal troubles as if they were government overreach themselves? I’m not saying that Trump picked Waco for a rally site because of this, but I’m also saying that such an association is more than the typical dog whistle to certain pro-Trump extremists.
And that’s not even getting into the content of the rally, which featured both the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance being completely bastardized in the form of one of the worst excuses of a song that I’ve ever heard. Making matters worse, the song consists entirely of Trump saying the Pledge and prisoners involved in January 6 singing the National Anthem after that. This is the same Trump that endlessly bitched about Kaepernick back in 2017, as well as the same MAGA movement that had a hissy fit over “Lift Every Voice And Sing” (which was performed in addition to “The Star-Spangled Banner,” just saying) at this year’s Super Bowl.
I’m not writing this just to dunk on the former President, by the way. I’m writing about this because his delusions of grandeur that have developed since his 2020 election loss have clearly consumed him whole. After all, his defeat then was the first time he was ever expected to take no for an answer in the public eye, and all he’s proven is that he simply can’t. And he’s running for President again, despite repeatedly proving that even if his criminal cases are entirely politicized (which isn’t exactly the case), he’s completely unfit for office at this point. If he wasn’t a narcissistic man-child before, I’d say this recent rally he had should remove all doubt.
